Goronyo L4 Chondrite Meteorites for Sale
Location: Goronyo, Sokoto State, Nigeria 13º1.6'N 5º24'E
Found: October 31, 2001.
Type: Ordinary Chondrite, L4
Description: Several broken pieces, apparently originating from a single mass totaling about 11kg were obtained by a meteorite dealer in the United States from a meteorite hunter in Nigeria. The Nigerian meteorite hunter also included a typed sheet claiming to be a police report describing a fall and recovery of a meteorite on October 31, 2001. The condition of the meteorite, including observation of caliche deposits on the crust, is inconsistent with the report. The mean olivine composition is Fa21.8, and the mean low-Ca pyroxene is Fs19.9, Wo1.0, so this classifies the meteorite as an L chondrite. Goronyo is petrologic type 4: chondrules of all textural types are clearly defined, matrix is recrystallized and some monoclinic low-Ca pyroxene is present. It is moderately shocked, with undulatory extinction and weak mosaicism in olivine, hence it is shock stage S4. There is minor oxidation of metal, hence weathering grade W1.
